The Vanity Of Sirens

by A Constant Storm

Long afloat on shipless oceans I did all my best to smile 'Til your singing eyes and fingers Drew me loving to your isle And you sang Sail to me, sail to me Let me enfold you Here I am, here I am Waiting to hold you Did I dream, you dreamed about me? Were you here when I was full sail? Now my foolish boat is leaning Broken lovelorn on your rocks For you sing Touch me not, touch me not Come back tomorrow Oh, my heart Oh, my heart shies from the sorrow Well I'm as puzzled as the newborn child I'm as riddled as the tide Should I stand amid the breakers? Or should I lie with death my bride? Hear me sing Swim to me, swim to me Let me enfold you Here I am, here I am Waiting to hold you

Vanity 03:24
Cannot cope with this realization Cannot quite view the world as it is Should I try to achieve sublimation? Is there now a new reason for this? As I've walked through the groves of my vanity So I've feared that my reason was gone Though I clawed at the cage, with my full force at hand The locks were shut and so they would remain But for now... Why did all have to come down to this? When my own purpose changed in a heartbeat Nature failed to predict the enigma Of the soldier who sought to be king As I ran through the pits of the colony So I cried, I knew I had to leave Though I dashed straight ahead, with my full speed at hand The cage of tunnels would not let me go Oh! I swayed through all moods in my vanity And I cursed all the changes inside Oh! I tried to ignore, to make all thoughts withdraw Alas, time was then moving too fast All has changed...

about

Season's greetings from A Constant Storm:

It was a cold, silent night in late-November 2021. I was sitting at home, struggling to come up with songs for my new project Crianças do Labirinto's upcoming album, during what was being a pretty dreary sequence of months, in which my creative spark was - once again - being stubbornly idle.

I had recently been really getting into the whole minimalist 'singer-songwriter' scene, having found a particular interest in Nick Drake's «Pink Moon» album, as well as Tim Buckley's «Lorca» and «Starsalior» records, the latter of which I eventually decided to put on and listen to for a while.

5 songs into the album, "Song to the Siren" came on. I had been a fan of this tune for many years prior - way before I even got into Buckley's stuff -, as it had notoriously been covered by some of my favorite gothic-leaning bands, namely This Mortal Coil and Dead Can Dance, whose 2013 live rendition, from the «In Concert» record, still strikes me as one of the all-time best covers any band or artist has ever done, across all genres.

A sudden burst of inspiration came over me and I decided to try my hand at recording my own interpretation of this classic, where I tried to stay somewhat faithful to the spirit of Tim's original composition, while adding some stuff from This Mortal Coil and Dead Can Dance's interpretations, as well as Amenra's lesser-known version, that had only been released earlier in the year.

The final result of this maritime maelstrom came after a few takes and a bit of minimalistic editing, and makes up Side-A of this year-end single that I now have the pleasure of sharing with all of you.

Side B is dedicated to "Vanity", an original song that will be appearing in A Constant Storm's next full length studio record, which I'll hopefully be ready to unveil sometime during the fall of 2022. In keeping with "Song to the Siren"'s spirit, this is also a minimalistic 'guitar + vocals only' version, that will differ from the full band rendition to be included in the actual album.

The lyrics tackle the subject of the shifting of goals that people go through, integrated within the operatic story of the upcoming record. This is, then, the first taste of said story, so it's possible that some clues about the general themes of my future work can be found.
